Guide

5-step video de-identification — detect faces automatically, then fine-tune masks before export

1

Open your video

Choose an MP4, MOV, AVI, or WebM file. Opening a video does not upload it to a server; the file stays on your device and is processed locally in the browser.

2

Analyze faces automatically

AI detects and tracks faces throughout the video. Timeline thumbnails are prepared during analysis so you can review the result without decoding the video again.

3

Select faces to mask

Choose which detected faces should be de-identified. You can keep specific faces visible, or de-identify only the ones you select.

4

Edit masks on the timeline

Review the result frame by frame. Move or resize mask boxes, remove false positives, add manual masks, and preview the actual de-identification effect before export. Sign-in is required to edit masks.

5

Export and download

VideoMasker encodes the final video with your selected faces and manual edits applied. Where supported, frame-accurate timing and original audio are preserved.

Technology Behind the Scenes

Face Detection

The VideoMasker-v2 face detector finds faces in the video, while the browser-based tracking pipeline keeps identities consistent across frames.

Multi-Face Tracking

Smart tracking ensures consistent identification across frames, even when faces temporarily disappear or overlap.

Mask Editing

VideoMasker combines AI-generated mask tracks with manual keyframed tracks, then applies all corrections during final encoding.

Smart Anonymization

Choose between blur or pixelation effects with adjustable intensity for precise results.

Browser Compatibility

VideoMasker uses cutting-edge web technologies including WebAssembly and WebGPU. For the best experience, we recommend the following browsers.

Limited Support

  • Firefox (MediaRecorder fallback)
  • Safari (WASM only, may experience slower performance)

iOS Device Notice

iPhones and iPads do not support WebGPU, using WASM fallback instead. Processing speed may be significantly slower than desktop. For longer videos, we recommend using Chrome on PC/Mac.
